How buyers should specify solar DC protection before RFQ
Solar DC protection includes breakers, MCCBs, isolators, surge protection, fuse holders, gPV fuses and rapid shutdown devices. These products should be selected by DC voltage, current, breaking capacity and system architecture.
The safest RFQ defines the circuit role first: string protection, combiner protection, inverter input isolation or surge protection. Then the rating, pole count, enclosure and standard can be confirmed.
- Confirm 600V, 1000V or 1500V DC system rating before choosing device family.
- Match rated current, pole count and breaking capacity to the circuit, not only the cable size.
- Select SPD type and voltage level according to grounding arrangement and protection design.
- Check whether the device will be supplied loose or assembled inside a combiner/distribution box.
- AC breakers cannot be substituted for DC PV circuits unless specifically rated for that DC application.
- Breaking capacity and DC arc performance are often more important than nominal current alone.
- SPD voltage and type must fit the PV array and earthing design.
- Fuse holder, fuse link and cable terminal temperature ratings should be reviewed together.

Can AC breakers be used on the DC side of a solar system?
No, unless the device is specifically rated for the required DC voltage and breaking capacity. DC arc interruption is different from AC.
