Product Overview
Higher 40kA discharge current rating compared to the 20kA variant for installations in areas with higher lightning activity or where the inverter manufacturer specifies a minimum SPD rating for warranty coverage. Same voltage range (600V-1500V DC) and pole options as the 20kA variant.
40kA Type 2 is the more common specification on European utility and C&I PV projects. Some inverter warranties explicitly require 40kA Type 2 SPD at the DC input — check the inverter documentation before specifying.
The 40kA impulse current rating provides additional protection margin for exposed ground-mount or rooftop arrays in regions with high annual lightning days or poor soil resistivity. OmniSol recommends the 40kA variant for projects in tropical markets where seasonal thunderstorm frequency and cumulative lightning ground flash density are high.
Applications
PV string and array protection
Combiner box internal protection

Frequently Asked Questions
When is 40kA SPD required instead of 20kA?
Specify 40kA when the local lightning protection standard requires higher discharge current in the Type 2 position, when the inverter warranty mandates 40kA, or when a lightning risk assessment indicates elevated surge energy at the site.
Can EKU5-T2-40PV be retrofitted into an existing combiner box?
Yes, if the combiner has a DIN rail slot with adequate clearance. Confirm the SPD mounting depth and the terminal wire size against the combiner box internal layout before ordering.
