Solar surface & river intake pump systems

When the water is at or near the surface, the pump sits above it and pulls. That changes the sizing: suction lift, not depth, is the thing that limits what is possible, and it has a ceiling no amount of motor power gets past.

We supply the equipment package FOB China through audited partner factories. Intake works, pipework, foundations and installation stay with your local contractor.

The 8 metre ceiling nobody mentions

A surface pump does not suck water up. Atmospheric pressure pushes it up the suction pipe into the space the impeller clears. That gives a hard limit of roughly 8 m of suction lift, and it is the same limit on a 1 kW pump and a 10 kW pump. Buying more power does not buy more lift on the suction side.

Suction side

From the water surface up to the pump inlet. Roughly 8 m maximum, less once suction pipe friction is counted.

Delivery side

From the pump up to the tank, plus friction and outlet pressure. No physical ceiling here, only what the pump curve gives.

Total dynamic head

Suction lift plus delivery lift plus all the friction. This is the number that selects the pump.

Two things that eat into the 8 m

Friction in the suction pipe. It comes straight off the lift you have available, so the suction line wants to be short and one size larger than you think. A long thin suction pipe is the most common reason a correctly chosen pump will not prime.

Altitude. Atmospheric pressure falls with height, so at 1,500 m the practical limit is closer to 6.5 m than 8 m. Tell us the site elevation and we allow for it.

What we need to know about your intake

Six things. The first one is the one that decides whether a surface pump is possible at all.

Vertical distance from water to pumpMeasured at the lowest the river or canal gets, not at today’s level. This is the suction lift and it has a hard ceiling.
Where the water goesHeight to the tank or the highest point in the field, plus the pressure the irrigation needs at its inlet.
Pipe run and boreSuction side and delivery side separately. Friction on the suction side eats directly into the lift you have available.
Daily water demandCubic metres per day, and whether it has to arrive within the solar window.
What the water carriesSand, silt, weed or debris. It decides the strainer, the impeller material and how often someone has to clear it.
Site location and existing powerDrives module temperature derating, wind loading, freight, and whether a hybrid controller is worth it.

What the range covers

Catalogue values for solar surface pumps in current production. Note how flow and head trade against each other as the outlet gets bigger: the 4" pump moves nine times the water of the 1" pump and lifts it a third as far.

OutletMax flowMax headMotorSuction lift

2"25 – 30 m³/h15 m1200 – 1300 W8 m

4"50 – 55 m³/h10 m1200 – 1300 W8 m

Figures are model maxima, not one operating point. Maximum flow and maximum head sit at opposite ends of the same curve.

If the site also has mains power

An AC/DC hybrid controller switches between solar and mains automatically, one source at a time. It costs more than a solar-only controller, so it earns its place when the supply is genuinely reliable and the water cannot wait for the next sunny day.

Frequently asked questions

How high can a solar surface pump lift water from a river?

About 8 m of suction lift, and that is a physical ceiling rather than a model difference. Atmospheric pressure is what pushes water up the suction pipe, so no pump of any power lifts more. Every metre of suction pipe friction comes off that 8 m, which is why short, wide suction pipe matters more here than on the delivery side.

What is the difference between a surface pump and a submersible pump?

A surface pump sits above the water and pulls it up the suction pipe; a submersible sits under the water and pushes. Surface pumps suit rivers, canals, tanks and shallow sumps, and are easier to reach for service. Submersibles suit boreholes, because a surface pump simply cannot reach water more than about 8 m down.

Can a surface pump be used on a borehole?

Only if the water rests within about 8 m of the surface and stays there while pumping. On most drilled boreholes it does not, so a submersible is the right choice. If you are not sure, measure the static water level first: that single number decides it.

Do I need a separate controller, or is it built into the pump?

Both exist. Smaller surface kits usually have the controller integrated with the pump; larger installations use a separate drive cabinet, which is easier to site out of the weather and easier to service. Which one you get is a specification choice, so say on the enquiry form if you have a preference.

What happens when the river level drops?

The suction lift increases and the pump loses flow, then loses prime. Size against the lowest level the source reaches in a dry year, not the level on the day you measured it. A floating intake or a moveable skid is often cheaper than a pump sized for a worst case that rarely happens.

Can the pump run off grid power when there is no sun?

With an AC/DC hybrid controller, yes. It switches between solar and mains automatically, one source at a time. It costs more than a solar-only controller, so it is worth it when the site genuinely has a reliable supply and the water cannot wait for the next sunny day.

Tell us where the water is

The distance from the water surface up to where the pump would stand is the one number that decides this. Send that and roughly where the site is, and we can start.
