Product Overview
AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) combiner box with arc fault detection on each string input for PV systems where arc fault protection is mandated by code or inverter warranty. Arc fault detection protects against series and parallel arcing in module wiring and connectors that would not trip standard overcurrent protection.
AFCI protection in the combiner is increasingly required in US NEC 2017 and later jurisdictions for residential and commercial PV installations. The 8-string configuration covers common residential and small commercial array sizes.
The EKPSBSR-8-1 integrates arc fault circuit interruption directly into the combiner box, continuously monitoring all 8 string inputs for the waveform signature of a sustained DC arc fault. When detected, the output circuit trips before arc temperatures can damage wiring insulation — eliminating the need for a separate downstream AFCI device per string circuit.
Applications
PV string combining
DC array protection
C&I rooftop solar
Utility-scale field combiner circuits
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AFCI protection and when is it required?
AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) detects arcing faults in PV wiring — loose connectors, damaged cable insulation, or degraded module junction boxes can arc without drawing enough current to trip a standard fuse or MCB. NEC 2017 Section 690.11 requires AFCI for PV systems in the US in many states.
Does AFCI combiner replace standard fuse protection?
AFCI combiners include arc fault detection alongside or in addition to standard fuse protection — they do not replace overcurrent protection. The combiner provides both arc fault trip capability and standard string fusing.
