South African farming runs on boreholes, and a lot of those boreholes still run on grid power that is not always there or on diesel that keeps getting more expensive. Solar pumping changes the arithmetic, but only if the system is sized from the well rather than from a kilowatt number.

What drives solar pumping in South Africa
Four things buyers here raise before anything technical comes up.
| Load shedding | A pump that only runs when the grid is up does not irrigate on a schedule. Solar pumping moves the constraint from the grid to the sun, which is far more predictable here. |
| Diesel cost and theft | Running and refuelling a diesel pump on a remote borehole costs money and attention. Fuel going missing is a known problem on unattended sites. |
| Borehole depth | Static levels of 40 to 80 m are ordinary on farms in Limpopo, North West and the Northern Cape, and deeper is not unusual. That rules out surface pumps and makes the duty point arithmetic matter. |
| Water tariffs and abstraction rules | Volume matters, which makes it worth sizing for the water you are entitled to take rather than for the biggest pump that fits. |
Site conditions that change the specification
These are the local conditions we allow for at sizing, rather than discover at commissioning.
| Ambient temperature | High summer temperatures derate the array and heat the cabinet. String sizing has to hold at both ends of the year, and the cabinet needs shade or ventilation planned before the room is built. |
| Dust | Array soiling is real in the drier provinces and it is a maintenance item rather than a design one. Worth budgeting time for it rather than being surprised. |
| Lightning | Open farmland with a long DC run is the worst case for induced surges. Surge protection on the DC side is cheap relative to a drive. |
| Theft and vandalism | Anti-theft fasteners, a raised array and a cabinet that locks are worth specifying at the start. Retrofitting them is more expensive and less effective. |
Import and compliance
What we can provide is factory documentation. What has to be arranged in South Africa is arranged by you or your customs agent, and we would rather set that out clearly than let it surface at the port.
| NRCS Letter of Authority | Electrical equipment entering South Africa generally needs an NRCS LOA before it can be sold. Confirm with your own compliance advisor which items in your scope are covered and who holds the LOA, because it belongs to a product and a holder rather than to a shipment. |
| SANS installation standards | The installation side is governed by South African wiring rules and has to be signed off by a registered person. That is your contractor’s responsibility, not the equipment supplier’s. |
| Import documentation | Standard export document set from our side: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Clearance and duty are arranged at your end. |

We do not keep installation or commissioning crews here. Drilling, pipework, civil work and the electrical connection are done by people you appoint locally.
We supply FOB China
Goods, export packing, loading and export documents are ours. Freight, insurance, duty, clearance and the inland leg are arranged at your end or by a forwarder you nominate.
Support is remote
Selection, sizing, drawings, document packs and troubleshooting by message or call. That is real support, and it is not the same as someone arriving at the farm.

Electrical equipment sold into South Africa generally falls under NRCS compulsory specifications, and an LOA is held by a product and a holder rather than issued per shipment. Which items in a pumping system are covered depends on the scope, so confirm it with your own compliance advisor early. We can tell you what documentation the factory holds; we cannot tell you what your import requires.
How deep can a solar borehole pump go in South Africa?
Depth is not the constraint; head is. A pump set at 80 m might be working against 55 m of head or 110 m, depending on where the water rests, how far it draws down and what the delivery run costs. Measure the static water level and the drawdown first, then the arithmetic decides what is possible.
Will a solar pump still work during load shedding?
A solar-only system does not care about the grid at all, because it never uses it. If the site has a supply you want to keep as backup, the cabinet can be arranged to transfer automatically or to stand by for manual use. Those are three different bills of materials, so say which you want.
Do you have stock or an office in South Africa?
No. Everything is made in China and ships from a Chinese port, and we do not keep stock, a warehouse or installation crews in South Africa. Installation and commissioning are done by a contractor you appoint. We would rather say that than have it discovered at delivery.
Which port do you ship to?
Durban and Cape Town are the usual entries. We supply FOB China, so freight and the routing are arranged by you or a forwarder you nominate. If you would rather have a CIF price to a named port we can quote that instead.
Can you quote against a BOQ from a South African consultant?
Yes, and that is the easiest way to work. We price line by line against your bill of quantities with manufacturer and model on every line, so it can be compared against a local quotation on the same basis.
